There are people in the world so hungry that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread, said by Mahatma Gandhi. According to United Nations food and Agriculture Organization one in nine people are suffering from “Chronic Undernourishment”. Now most of you have seen advertisement in your television or read an article in your magazine to send food at places where people are in great need. We’ve all must have felt very visceral and many of us must have done charity and must have donated what we could but do you really think that by sending more and more food we kill hunger?
Now don’t get me wrong I really think feeding a hungry is a very noble and necessary, but by only doing that. See those people on TV and behind magazines aren’t really just hungry for food they are also hungry for opportunity.
One of my favorite all time quote is this:
TALENT is evenly distributed all around the world, opportunity is not.
We look upon people in these countries as victims, and when we do that we take away their dignity. But truthfully they have just as much talent, creativity, intelligence asmuch as we do. It is the opportunity that they lack. So what if we began to see them not as victims, but as change makers, the future. They hold the key to their own salvation. I’m not saying they need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, like some people do. But if we support causes that not only send food but also help to provide people freedom, power and agency to express themselves. So they can fix their own problems. This will create the biggest and the most sustainable impact which would last long or may be forever.
So what now? What should we do? Well there is a global organization namely “The Hunger Project” which you would love what they are doing. They are a non-profit organization that mobilizes governments and people towards success. They motto is empowerment. Giving hungry people their dignity back. They teach practical skill in farming, nutrition, sanitation and make sure they work on the ground helping people shift their mindset, so that they can shift their own hunger and shift their future.
When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will automatically change.
